This webinar will describe the role that art, specifically how the power of music and music-making has on healing, resiliency, and wellbeing for those that have experienced trauma due to war and oppression of basic human rights. An overview of the role of music and trauma will provide a background for the significance that arts-based approaches including music has on the mental health and wellbeing of individuals and groups. This is followed by a discussion from Susan McDonald’s work with refugee groups in war-torn countries. Finally, we offer some policy and practice implications for adopting art-based approaches to settlement services, counseling supports, health and umbrella organizations for exploring music as a possible healing modality.
